How much drywall do I need?
The clean way to estimate drywall is to separate installed area from board order area. Installed area is the wall and ceiling surface you plan to cover after subtracting openings. Board order area is installed area plus waste. BoardCount applies waste to sheet ordering only, then estimates mud, tape, screws, and corner bead from the installed area.
1. Measure wall area
For a rectangular room, measure length, width, and wall height. Wall area is the room perimeter multiplied by height:
Wall area = 2 x (length + width) x height
If the room has several wall sections, measure each wall separately and add them together. Keep everything in feet. For example, 9 feet 6 inches is 9.5 feet.
2. Add ceiling area if you are boarding the ceiling
Ceiling area is length multiplied by width. If the ceiling is not included in the drywall scope, leave it out. If only part of the ceiling is included, measure that section separately and add only that area.
3. Subtract openings
Doors, windows, pass-throughs, and large openings reduce installed drywall area. Multiply each opening width by height, multiply by quantity, then subtract the total. Many fast field estimates use standard opening sizes, such as a 3 ft by 7 ft door or a 3 ft by 4 ft window. For a tighter quote, measure actual rough openings.
4. Choose a waste percentage
Waste covers cuts, damaged sheets, layout choices, and real jobsite conditions. A simple starting point is 10% to 12% for clean rectangular rooms. Small rooms, patchy remodels, many openings, many corners, or awkward layouts can justify more. BoardCount's free web calculator defaults to 12%.
Waste should increase sheet ordering, not finish materials. Mud, tape, and screws are based on the installed drywall area because those materials are used on the board that is actually hung and finished.
5. Pick sheet size
A 4 x 8 sheet covers 32 sq ft, a 4 x 10 sheet covers 40 sq ft, and a 4 x 12 sheet covers 48 sq ft. Larger sheets can reduce seams and finishing work, but they are heavier and harder to handle. Smaller sheets can be easier in tight remodel conditions. Use the drywall sheet-size and coverage guide to compare the common options before choosing the board strategy.
For a quick planning pass, pick the sheet size you expect to carry and hang on that job. For a bid, think through stair access, elevator access, ceiling height, and whether one person or a crew will be moving sheets.
6. Estimate mud, tape, screws, and corner bead
BoardCount's current estimating assumptions are intentionally simple and consistent:
- Tape: 37 linear feet per 100 sq ft of installed drywall.
- Joint compound: 1.0 gallon per 100 sq ft of installed drywall.
- Screws: 0.27 lb per 100 sq ft of installed drywall.
- One 1-lb screw box is estimated at 265 screws.
- Corner bead sticks are counted as 8 ft sticks.
Package counts round up. If the math says 1.1 rolls of tape, order 2 rolls. If the math says 4.6 gallons of compound and your pails are 4.5 gallons, order 2 pails.
Worked example
Say a room is 12 ft by 14 ft with 8 ft walls, the ceiling is included, there is one 3 ft by 7 ft door, two 3 ft by 4 ft windows, 12% waste, 4 x 8 sheets, and four outside corners.
- Wall area: 2 x (12 + 14) x 8 = 416 sq ft.
- Ceiling area: 12 x 14 = 168 sq ft.
- Openings: one 21 sq ft door + two 12 sq ft windows = 45 sq ft.
- Installed area: 416 + 168 - 45 = 539 sq ft.
- Waste area: 539 x 12% = 64.7 sq ft.
- Board order area: 539 + 64.7 = 603.7 sq ft.
- Sheets: 603.7 / 32 = 18.9, rounded up to 19 sheets.
- Tape: 539 / 100 x 37 = 199.4 linear ft, rounded up to 1 roll.
- Mud: 539 / 100 x 1.0 = 5.4 gallons, rounded up to 2 pails.
- Screws: 539 / 100 x 0.27 = 1.5 lb, rounded up to 2 boxes and about 398 screws.
- Corner bead: 4 outside corners x 8 ft = 32 ft, rounded up to 4 sticks.
