Worked examples
These examples use the same assumptions and whole-sheet rounding as the calculator above. They are visible even when JavaScript is off.
Enter 960 sq ft of walls and 360 sq ft of ceiling, with 12% waste. Installed area is 1,320 sq ft. Board order area is 1,320 × 1.12 = 1,478.4 sq ft. At 48 sq ft per 4 × 12 sheet, round 30.8 up to 31 sheets.
Finish materials use the 1,320 sq ft installed area, not the waste-adjusted order area: about 13.2 gal of compound (3 × 4.5-gal pails), 488.4 linear ft of tape (1 × 500-ft roll), and 3.6 lb of screws (4 × 1-lb boxes).
A 12 × 10 × 8 ft room has 352 sq ft of walls and 120 sq ft of ceiling. Subtract one 3 × 7 ft door and two 3 × 4 ft windows: 472 − 45 = 427 sq ft installed. With 10% waste, order area is 469.7 sq ft. At 32 sq ft per 4 × 8 sheet, round 14.7 up to 15 sheets.
For the installed area, allow about 4.3 gal of compound (1 pail), 158.0 linear ft of tape (1 roll), and 1.2 lb of screws (2 boxes). Measure outside corners separately for corner bead.
