Drywall sheet sizes: 4 x 8, 4 x 10, and 4 x 12.
The sheet size changes more than the divisor in a calculator. It changes how many panels the crew carries, how many seams need finishing, where butt joints land, and whether the material can reach the room without damage. The best board size is the one that fits the layout, access, and crew while keeping the order practical.
Common drywall sheet coverage

Sheet-count formula
Calculate the installed wall and ceiling area, account for the opening rule you use, apply the board waste allowance, divide by the selected panel coverage, and round up to the next whole sheet.
Sheets = ceiling((installed area x (1 + waste percent)) / sheet coverage)
BoardCount applies waste to the board order only. Mud, tape, and screws use installed area because finish materials cover the drywall that is actually hung.

Fewer sheets do not automatically mean a lower total cost. Longer panels may reduce seams and finishing, but difficult handling, extra crew, lift needs, damage risk, or delivery constraints can erase that gain. Treat the count as one input in the installation plan.
Match sheet size to wall height and layout
Before ordering, sketch how the board will land. A longer sheet may span more of a wall and remove butt joints. A taller wall may benefit from a panel length that fits the layout cleanly. Hallways, stairwells, and small remodel rooms may favor shorter board even when a longer panel looks better on paper.
Horizontal and vertical installation choices depend on framing, assembly requirements, fire and sound details, wall height, and local practice. Follow the applicable plans, manufacturer instructions, code requirements, and project specifications rather than choosing orientation from sheet count alone.
Check the full material path
Measure the path from unloading to the final room. Check doors, turns, stairs, elevator dimensions, ceiling height, occupied finishes, and the space needed to rotate a panel. A 12-foot sheet that cannot reach the work area is not an efficient order.
Confirm who will unload, carry, stage, and lift the board. Longer and thicker panels can require more hands or mechanical help. The board strategy should be realistic for the crew assigned to the job, not an idealized layout that assumes unlimited labor.
Ceilings need a handling plan
Ceiling sheets can reduce seams when longer board fits, but overhead handling changes the decision. Consider panel lift access, joist direction, room width, crew size, and whether the finished ceiling layout justifies the larger panel. Record ceiling board separately when its size or type differs from wall board.
Use one size or a mixed order?
A whole job does not always need one panel size. Open rooms may justify 4 x 12, while closets, patches, and constrained areas use 4 x 8. If you mix sizes, keep the room takeoff clear so each quantity can be checked and ordered without double counting.
